We have had |
24th October - 4th November 2001 The Italian Job motto "Definitely the most fun you can have in a Mini" is certainly true. The great thing is that it also raises an awful lot of money for children's charities. I was lucky enough to get to go with Karen representing MiniWorld. Originally she was going to go with Tim Mundy their Technical Editor, but he had to drop out. Her boyfriend couldn't go with her as he'd run out of holiday this year, so I got pulled in at the last minute as replacement - but I'm certainly not complaining!
Before you start reading what I've got to say about the event, I'd like to stress that this is my personal account of my experiences on the Italian Job, and not necessarily Karen's or MiniWorld's opinions. I don't work for MiniWorld and I'm useless at technical stuff where cars are concerned, so I'll definitely get any techie bits wrong. I am, however, a complete Mini nutter as you will gather if you look at the rest of this site, and I mean real Minis, not the BMW hatchback. We went in Sputnik, the MiniWorld car, and we were team No. 01 which meant we were the first team to leave on the rally stages. Sounds cool, but it was actually a bit of a nightmare seeing as neither of us had done it before. Overall I think the best part of the Italian job is getting there and back, and the fun of driving in Mini convoys through some of the most magnificent scenery you could imagine. Plus we met up with some great people coming off the ferry at Calais, and had some real adventures on our way to Italy and back. Here's a taster of some of the things you'll see in the day by day account of our activities:
