Training

At the beginning of 1941 Joe went to Leicester College to start his training as a Radio Mechanic.

Joe during his time at Leicester College pictured in a rowing boat on the Leicester Canal during one of Ivy's visits to see him.  Apparently it was a very romantic weekend.

His next move was to Gainsborough in Lincolnshire, where he was trained as RM111 (Radio mechanic class 3) qualifying on 21st September 1941, and posted to the RA (Royal Artillery).  He was sent to Spurn Point, Humberside, where he looked after one of the first SLC (Electronic Searchlight Control) installations onsite.  Consequently he went back to Gainsborough where he trained as ARM/ART(Radar) (Armament Artificer) from 15th December 1941 – 30th March 1942.

During this time, on 11th March 1942, Joe and Ivy got married during a very short period of leave. At the time of their wedding he was a Staff Sergeant as he had to be promoted to qualify for the training course, although he was demoted immediately afterwards and posted to the RAOC (Royal Army Ordinance Corps) as RM1 (Radio Mechanic Class 1).

Joe then went to 21st AA (Anti Aircraft) Workshop Company at Barton, Manchester as a Corporal, gained promotion to Staff Sergeant and was put in charge of  the Radio Workshop.
