Hoboken, Antwerp Belgium

21st A.A. Workshop Company R.E.M.E. 1945

Joe's whole unit (including over 500 vehicles) were sent to Hoboken, Antwerp, 21st army group on 14th February 1945.  Here they carried out vital defence work, detecting German aircraft on radar before they crossed the Channel.

During this time he was very ill in Melines Hospital.  Unknown to him or the doctors he was allergic to sulphonamides and penicillin.  Some treatment with sulphonamide cream for a cold sore caused all sorts of problems which the doctors then treated with penicillin.  This treatment caused him to be unconscious for two days.

The unit came under attack by flying bombs towards the end of their time there and  one of the workshops was hit.
