Thursday 30th October
Dijon - Lyon - Monte Carlo - San Remo
|
| We left the hotel in Dijon bright
and early and stopped for a late breakfast on the way to Lyon.

| A day of concentrated driving...
taking it in turns to lead, but enjoying the uncluttered French
motorways. The weather was pretty dull for most of the way, but
luckily we didn't get rained on.

Suddenly our first view of sea
since Calais. By now it was much brighter and warmer and it was the
Mediterranean we could see rather than the English Channel. Through
tunnels in the hills along the motorway bypassing Nice, and started our
descent into Monaco. |

| Our arrival in Monte Carlo
coincided with their rush hour, which meant a crawl around the Grand Prix
circuit. We then headed to the Marina to take a few pics of the car
as darkness descended.

We decided not to try to find a
hotel in Monte Carlo itself as we knew the prices would be sky high.
So we decided to cross the border into Italy. Easier said than done
- the Monte Carlo rush hour meant we had to crawl through the traffic,
keep getting split up by traffic lights. Thank goodness for
walkie-talkies. Eventually we found the way to the border, on an
unbelievably bad pot-holed road. We were in Italy!! We then
went a few miles along the coast road before finding a hotel with decent
parking to rest the Minis for the night. The hotel was the Napoleon
Hotel in San Remo - two massive rooms big enough to sleep at least four
people each. We then found a really nice local pizza restaurant just
down the road, where we had our first Italian meal
